Transitioning to and Adult Service

In July 2019, I was chosen to present at the National Occupational Therapy Conference to share my research into the transition of our secondary students out of the Giant Steps School Sydney and into the adult community day-program, also operated by Giant Steps.

During the course of my research, I discovered that the most significant difference between in the school or the day-program, was the shift in the individual’s occupational role from that of a “student” to an “adult”.

The impact that this abrupt and substantial change in the individuals identity can have on their performance of everyday activities, emotional regulation and engagement can be far-reaching.

These implications of my findings and how we intend to improve our practice when completing student transitions at Giant Steps can be read about in the attached document and accompanying PowerPoint presentation.
